A U.S. Air airplane crash landed yesterday outside of Pittsburgh en route from Chicago killing all 131 people on board. The cause of this catastrophe is still under investigation, however it's been labeled as the worst airplane crash on U.S. soil in the past three years.
Good first sentence, but get rid of "The cause of this catastrophe is still under investigation" -- with 131 people dead, trust readers to figure out that it's a catastrophe without you telling them. Just conclude your lead by saying, "It's the worst airplane crash on U.S. soil in the past three years."
